Bulldogs are an AWESOME breed, in-fact in my opinion, they are the best breed in the world. They have that special, cute and comical look that makes you smile on a rainy day:) Bulldogs usually 95 percent of the time require a c-section for delivery of the puppies and artificial insemination to breed.
The cost to raise a litter of healthy english bulldog puppies can range between 2 and 4 thousand dollars!! Yes, you read that correctly! It is very pricey for the breeder, however I personally love what I do and my goal is to continue producing healthy bulldogs at a reasonable price. The average litter size is usually 4 puppies. The Cost for a c-section, is usually about 7 to 9 hundred dollars assuming it is during normal vet hours. After hours, weekends, and holidays will cost extra. To breed the female, is between 5 hundred and 1 thousand dollars for the semen/stud service plus shipping if it applies. There is also the female pre fertility tests, exams, x-rays, ultra sounds and unexpected vet expenses.
When a litter is born most of the time they require the breeder to bottle or tube feed them. We spend every few hours with the litter and mother during feeding 24 hours a day for several days. Bulldogs don’t make the best mothers for many many reasons and a lot of times after the C- section, they have trouble producing enough milk to feed their babies. All of this requires the breeder to spend extra time in raising the puppies. C-sections for bulldogs is required for several reasons as follows: the large heads and shoulders of the puppies usually can’t pass through the birth canal which requires a C- section, stress and heat factors may cause a bulldog to struggle, the ability to push out a litter of puppies can be VERY stressful on a bulldog as well. It is very time consuming compared to other breeds where every thing is taken care of by the male and female dog including the birth and delivery and raising of the litter.
The English Bulldog is a very special breed which requires the help of humans to raise a litter for up to 8 weeks of age. Granted, they are worth every penny and at the end of the day, you really can’t put a price on that cute comical face that you will live with everyday:)
